Tourism in Macau: Why visit Macau?

A lot of people are surprised to learn that Macau is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. When you realize that it is one of the major gambling centers in the world this starts to make more sense. There is no getting around the fact that most of the people who go to Macau go to gamble, but there are other reasons that you may want to go.

The reason that the vast majority of tourists go to Macau is to gamble. Macau is one of the most popular gambling destinations in the world attracting more visitors for this than even Las Vegas. It should therefore come as no surprise that there are a large number of large casinos and hotels in the city to cater to the gamblers. Gamblers actually represent about forty percent of the GDP of Macau which tells you just how important it is to the local economy, and just how many people visit the city each year to gamble.

Over the last few years the owners of the casinos in Las Vegas have started building casinos in Macau and that has created a whole new tourist sector for the city. These new casinos are huge complexes that have a number of different things to offer besides gambling. The most popular option are the many shows that are held at these facilities. Some of the biggest stars in world perform regularly at the casinos and there are now many people who make the trip just to see these. A lot of these shows are long running performances that last for years so that you can see them whenever you happen to visit. Other shows will require that you plan your trip just to see them.

In addition to the shows the casinos have also started to host sporting events that attract large numbers of visitors. The most common of these are boxing and mixed martial arts which are fairly easy to arrange. There have also recently been several high profile basketball games played in Macau. The main purpose of these events is to bring in the gamblers but there are many people who will attend just to watch the sports.

There are of course people who visit Macau for reasons that have nothing to do with gambling. It is a city that has a long history and this means that there are quite a few thing s for the tourist to see. The city is a strange mixture of Chinese and Portuguese culture that you are not going to see anywhere else in the world. The city has a decidedly European feel although most of the people who live in the city are Chinese. There are a number of celebrations that combine both Portuguese and Chinese customs so you will be able to see things that you wouldn't see anywhere else.
